Professor Julian Thomas, ECP Director, Social Change, RMIT University
A digital divide exists in Australia, and with it comes the risk of deepening social, economic and cultural inequalities. As digital technologies become ever-more central to public and private life, the disadvantages of not being connected increase.
A team of researchers at RMIT and Swinburne Universities, led by Professor Julian Thomas, have partnered with Telstra and Roy Morgan Research to develop the The Australian Digital Index 2016. The Index makes a major contribution to our understanding of the digital divide that exists in Australia.
As information professionals, it is important that we have an understanding of the measures that track digital inclusion. How can the library and information sector respond to this research? What is our role in addressing this significant issue that impacts our digitally excluded communities?
