Every day we move rapidly into a future that looks less and less like our past. The rise of extreme longevity, smart machines, a new media ecology, a programmable world, and increased global interconnectivity, are a few key trends. While science, technology and innovation offer enormous opportunities for positive transformation, they have a dark side too. Rapid changes to the ways in which we work and live are affecting not only our planet and our societies but even who we are as humans. Librarians and information professionals are uniquely positioned to act as guides in this complex and uncertain age, bringing sense and meaning and helping others to understand the significance of what’s happening. Moreover, each of us is equipped with a powerful capability to shape the future into what we want it to be, if we learn how to use it. The stories we tell ourselves—as individuals, as organisations, and as societies—are the means by which we create our reality. We invent the future one story at a time. How can information professionals create a powerful future story, and use it to gain the support of their leaders, their funders, and their teams?
