A new tale of the public library in the networked society

Rolf Hapel, Director, Citizens' Services and Libraries, City of Aarhus

Keynote address
Thursday 16 February 2017, 3:30pm - 4:30pm

Rolf Hapel will in his presentation show how libraries can be active players and strong partners in the rapid societal changes coming from digitization. He will comment on the public libraries role in the eGov-policy with a strong mandatory self service aspect laid down by the Danish government.

He will describe the prevailing technical infrastructure based on three layermodularity, Open Source and Open Access - with a special focus on the Danish Digital Library as a forerunner of a broader municipal development.

The presentation will show possible roles of the public library as actor in ‘Smart City’ – initiatives concerning Open Data and Big Data and as actor in the development of new digital formats for citizens’ involvement in political decision-making – rethinking democracy.

Last, but not least, the Rolf will show the consequences of the digitization on the physical spaces in the library – using Dokk1 as example. He will touch upon both the hybrid technologies such as sorting robots and ‘intelligent’ media management as well as the interplay between pure digital services and their manifestation as new work tasks in the libraries such as editing the digital presence of the services in the room and on the social media.
